Smith Highlights Energy, Health and Education Agenda

Addressing a wide range of policy priorities in the latest episode of Alberta Update, Premier Danielle Smith outlined her government’s approach to energy development, health care access and education reform, with a focus on speeding up processes and tightening provincial control.

On energy, Smith highlighted proposed legislation that would introduce a 120-day approval timeline for major projects once environmental assessments and Indigenous consultations are in place. The aim is to reduce delays and give investors more certainty.

She tied the policy to broader economic goals, including increasing oil and gas production and expanding pipeline capacity. Smith pointed to some progress in discussions with the federal government, such as agreements on project approvals and methane reduction targets, but said negotiations continue, especially on carbon pricing.

The premier also pointed to rising interest in electricity generation and data infrastructure, suggesting Alberta is positioning itself to support both energy production and emerging industries.

In health care, Smith described a plan to expand access to comprehensive diagnostic testing. The model would allow patients to complete multiple tests in one visit instead of going through a series of referrals.

She said earlier diagnosis could lead to faster treatment, particularly for serious conditions. The system would allow patients to seek testing directly, with reimbursement available in certain cases.

On education, Smith defended proposed changes aimed at limiting political and ideological influence in classrooms. She said schools should focus on core subjects and critical thinking, rather than promoting specific viewpoints.

The proposal also addresses classroom safety. Smith said teachers are facing increasing incidents of violence and that new measures would give schools more authority to respond, including additional supports or removing students from regular classrooms when needed.
