Former Air Canada captain charged in alleged long-running pilot licence fraud

A former Air Canada captain has been charged after investigators alleged he spent years flying large commercial passenger aircraft without holding the licence required for the role.

Peel Regional Police announced Tuesday that 59-year-old Geoffrey Wall faces multiple criminal charges following what authorities called Project Icarus, an investigation into alleged fraud involving aviation credentials.

Police allege the former pilot served as a captain on Air Canada flights from 2009 until his retirement in 2025 despite never obtaining an Airline Transport Pilot Licence, the certification required to command commercial passenger aircraft.

Investigators said the accused began his career with Air Canada in 1998 as a first officer before being promoted to captain in 2009. During the following 16 years, he allegedly commanded Boeing 767, 777 and 787 aircraft on routes across Canada and around the world.

Police estimate he captained more than 900 flights and transported tens of thousands of passengers while earning millions of dollars in salary during that period.

The investigation began after Transport Canada identified irregularities in pilot licensing documents during a routine operational evaluation at Toronto Pearson International Airport in March 2025.

Authorities allege the pilot used altered and counterfeit licensing documents to misrepresent his qualifications to Air Canada and federal regulators. Investigators also allege he never completed the examinations required to obtain the licence needed to serve as captain of the aircraft he flew.

As part of the investigation, police executed a search warrant at a residence in Barrie in February 2026 and worked with the RCMP’s National Anti-Counterfeiting Bureau to examine the documents in question.

Police further allege the accused filed a false report with another police service claiming pilot documentation had been stolen, an incident investigators later determined had not occurred.

Geoffrey Wall, 55, was arrested on June 1 and is scheduled to appear in a Brampton court on June 29.

He faces charges of fraud over $5,000, two counts of uttering forged documents, three counts of possession of a counterfeit mark and one count of public mischief.

Investigators said there is no evidence that other individuals were involved in the alleged scheme.

The case has raised questions about how the alleged fraud could have gone undetected for so long.

The allegations have not been proven in court.
