Border officers in southern Alberta seized nearly 87 kilograms of suspected cocaine from a commercial truck entering Canada from the United States.
The Canada Border Services Agency said the discovery was made on Feb. 15 at the Coutts port of entry during an inspection of a Calgary-bound truck listed as carrying produce. Officers found 86.9 kilograms of suspected cocaine, packaged in 70 bricks and hidden inside three suitcases in the cab.
The driver was arrested at the scene and later turned over to the RCMP’s federal policing unit. The individual’s identity has not been released, and charges have not been confirmed.
The seizure follows several major drug interceptions at the same crossing late last year. In November and December 2025, more than 1,000 kilograms of narcotics were seized in three separate cases at Coutts.
Officials say using commercial shipments to conceal drugs remains a common tactic in cross-border trafficking.
In 2025, CBSA officers in Alberta made 1,292 narcotics seizures, including more than 1,050 kilograms of cocaine and 279 kilograms of methamphetamine.
The investigation is ongoing. Authorities are asking anyone with information about cross-border smuggling to contact police or Crime Stoppers.
