Canadians in Puerto Vallarta were ordered to shelter in place after street violence prompted flight cancellations and disrupted travel in the popular Mexican resort city.
The unrest began after clashes between Mexican security forces and suspected criminal groups in the state of Jalisco. Reports of gunfire, burning vehicles and roadblocks led local authorities to urge residents and tourists to remain indoors while security operations continued.
Airlines cancelled flights to and from Puerto Vallarta as a precaution, leaving travellers uncertain about when they would be able to return home. Air Canada and WestJet confirmed disruptions, citing safety concerns and airport restrictions.
Hotels advised guests to stay on the property, and some tour operators suspended excursions.
Global Affairs Canada said it is monitoring developments and urged Canadians to follow instructions and contact their airlines for updates and wanted them to register with its Registration of Canadians Abroad service.
It was not clear when normal flight schedules would resume or when shelter-in-place advisories would be lifted. Mexican authorities said security forces remain deployed to restore order and keep transportation routes secure.
