Project Gaslight suspect arrested after fleeing to India

A 21-year-old man accused in three drive-by shootings tied to Project Gaslight has been arrested, Edmonton police say.

Arjun Sahnan was taken into custody at Edmonton International Airport on Sept. 20. Police allege he left for India in late 2023, days after three homes were shot at in Edmonton, Winnipeg and Sherwood Park. Canada-wide warrants had been in place since April 2024.

Sahnan faces two counts of recklessly discharging a firearm and three counts of possessing a prohibited firearm with ammunition.

The first shooting happened Dec. 21, 2023, in Edmonton’s Cy Becker neighbourhood, when bullets struck a bedroom window while a family with children was sleeping inside.

Three days later, gunfire hit a house in northwest Winnipeg. A bullet tore through a bedroom, narrowly missing someone inside, before continuing into another occupied room.

The third incident came in the early hours of Dec. 29 in Sherwood Park. Shots were fired into an unoccupied house, one round landing in a children’s playroom. Investigators believe the address was targeted by mistake.

Police say homeowners in Edmonton and Winnipeg had received threats and demands for money before the shootings. Nobody was injured, but ballistic testing later confirmed all three attacks involved the same weapon.

Edmonton police say the investigation under Project Gaslight is ongoing and more arrests could follow.
