Ontario Premier Doug Ford announced his government’s plan to explore the feasibility of constructing a tunnel under Highway 401 today. The proposed tunnel would stretch from Brampton in the west to Scarborough in the east, spanning the entire GTA under Canada’s busiest highway.
Ford emphasized the urgency of addressing the escalating gridlock problem across the GTA. He cited alarming statistics predicting that by 2051, travel times on Highway 401 could double, adding up to 90 minutes to daily commutes. The increased congestion would not only frustrate commuters but also impose significant economic costs.
“Ontario is growing too fast, and we need to do more,” Ford stated. “Even with these projects underway, too many people are stuck in traffic across the GTA.”
The tunnel would serve as a significant relief valve for the current traffic volumes on Highway 401. It would connect major roads and highways from Brampton to Scarborough.
“This tunnel and expressway will cut gridlock, support economic growth, and help get people moving faster,” Ford asserted. He also reassured the public that the government would not impose any new tolls on this or any other highway, adhering to a promise made in previous legislation.
Ford acknowledged the ambitious nature of the project, stating that the government would begin by conducting a detailed feasibility study. The study will include initial soil testing along the proposed route, reviewing best practices from other jurisdictions, and assessing how the tunnel can mitigate gridlock while supporting the region’s economy.
“I know this is an ambitious idea, and that some people will say it can’t be done or that we shouldn’t even try,” Ford remarked. “But these are the same people who oppose every project, no matter how essential.”
The coming months will be critical as the government navigates the technical, financial, and political challenges. Whether the tunnel becomes a symbol of innovative problem-solving or an unattainable dream will depend on the outcomes of the feasibility study and the government’s ability to deliver on its promises.
