Tragic Motorcycle Collision Claims Life in Southeast Calgary

A tragic accident unfolded on Deerfoot Trail in southeast Calgary yesterday. The incident has left the community in shock and raised concerns about road safety in the area.

The collision took place as traffic was moving northbound on Deerfoot Trail, approaching the Anderson Road S.E. exit. A 50-year-old woman driving a 2010 Acura MDX was in the centre lane when she applied her brakes due to the slowing traffic ahead. Directly behind her was a woman, also in her late 50s, riding a 2002 Victory V92C motorcycle. As the Acura slowed, the motorcyclist, who was traveling in the same lane, attempted to brake heavily. However, she was unable to stop in time, resulting in a collision with the rear driver’s side of the Acura.

The force of the impact dismounted the motorcyclist, throwing her into the lane closest to the median. Tragically, she was then struck by a second vehicle, a 2020 Kia Forte, driven by a woman in her 30s. The motorcyclist sustained severe injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene.

Calgary police have launched an investigation into the collision. According to initial reports, alcohol, drugs, and excessive speed are not considered contributing factors in the crash.

While the investigation continues, the Calgary Police Service’s Traffic Unit is seeking any additional information from witnesses who may have seen the events leading up to the collision.

The identity of the motorcyclist has not been released, pending notification of her next of kin. However, the incident has already sent ripples of grief through the local community.

For now, the focus remains on understanding what led to this fatal collision and ensuring that similar tragedies can be prevented in the future. Road safety remains a shared responsibility, and this incident underscores the importance of everyone playing their part in keeping our roads safe for all.
