Alberta Premier Danielle Smith Speaks Out on Federal Bill C-59 and Alberta’s Economic Future

In a recent episode of Alberta Update, hosted by Bruce McAllister, Alberta Premier Danielle Smith shared her candid views on the latest federal legislation impacting the province, particularly Bill C-59. Bill C-59 has stirred significant controversy, primarily due to its potential effects on Alberta’s oil and gas industry.

Premier Smith did not hold back her criticism of Bill C-59, describing it as a “gag order on oil and gas companies.” She argued that the bill, which emerged from an NDP policy and was inserted as an amendment during the final stages of passing the federal budget implementation act, essentially makes it illegal for oil and natural gas companies to discuss their environmental achievements and emissions reductions.

“This is some kind of deranged vendetta against our oil and gas industry,” Smith remarked, emphasizing the immediate chilling effect it has had on energy companies. Many companies have already started pulling their advertising, fearing frivolous lawsuits due to the ambiguous language of the bill. The Premier expressed her concerns over the lack of clarity regarding the “internationally recognized standards” mentioned in the legislation, questioning the federal government’s data and the credibility of environmental groups involved in developing these standards.

Smith assured Albertans that her administration would challenge the federal government’s intervention from a constitutional standpoint and protect the charter rights of energy companies to communicate their environmental records.

Despite the federal challenges, Premier Smith highlighted Alberta’s strong economic performance. The province’s recent fiscal update revealed balanced books and record investments in education and healthcare. Smith credited the prudent budgeting approach, which accounted for potential fluctuations in oil and natural gas prices, for the substantial surplus. This surplus has enabled Alberta to pay down debt, improve its credit rating, and invest in critical infrastructure projects, including schools, hospitals, and mental health facilities.

Smith also emphasized the province’s commitment to maintaining the lowest tax environment in Canada, which continues to attract businesses and drive economic growth. She expressed satisfaction with the fiscal strategy that aligns with the government’s goals of financial stability and long-term prosperity.

The Premier lauded recent advancements in carbon capture and storage (CCS) projects, including new facilities announced by Shell. Alberta is already a leader in CCS technology, having sequestered 13 megatons of emissions through existing projects like the Shell Quest project and the Alberta Carbon Trunk Line. Smith sees the expansion of CCS projects as a major economic driver that reinforces Alberta’s position as a responsible energy producer with a low environmental footprint.

“We are so far ahead of so many other jurisdictions,” Smith noted, expressing optimism that these initiatives will attract further investments and establish Alberta as a global leader in sustainable energy practices.

On a lighter note, Premier Smith shared her enthusiasm for the Edmonton Oilers’ recent playoff run, despite their heartbreaking loss. She also mentioned her friendly wager with Florida Governor Ron DeSantis, promising to send him a selection of fine Alberta whiskey as a consolation prize.

Looking ahead, Smith expressed her excitement for the upcoming Calgary Stampede, the “Greatest Outdoor Show on Earth.” She invited Albertans to join her at the Premier’s Breakfast at McDougall Center, highlighting the event as an opportunity to connect with citizens and celebrate the province’s vibrant community spirit.
