The Canada Border Services Agency (CBSA) and U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) have unveiled plans to adjust the NEXUS application fee from US$50 to US$120.
Established in 2002, the NEXUS program is a bilateral trusted traveller initiative designed to facilitate smoother border crossings for pre-screened travellers. By providing benefits such as dedicated lanes at land border crossings, expedited processing at airport kiosks, and access to Global Entry kiosks for entry into the United States, NEXUS enhances the travel experience for frequent border crossers while maintaining stringent security measures.
The proposed fee adjustment, subject to regulatory approvals in both countries, seeks to align the program’s costs with its operational requirements and future enhancements. With the current fee set over two decades ago, the proposed increase to US$24 per year for the standard 5-year membership better reflects the program’s administrative costs and investment needs.
Applicants who have already initiated the enrolment process and paid the existing US$50 fee will not be subject to the proposed increase if they complete their enrolment interviews before October 1, 2024.
Over the past year, initiatives such as reducing interview inventories, expanding enrolment centre hours, and reintroducing two-step interviews at Canadian airport enrolment centres have been implemented to meet the growing demand for NEXUS membership.
Currently boasting over 1.8 million members, the NEXUS program continues to play a crucial role in fostering economic and social ties between Canada and the United States. Its benefits extend beyond expedited border crossings to include expedited security screening at select airports in both countries, further enhancing the travel experience for trusted travellers.
