Former Canadian Prime Minister Brian Mulroney Honored at Notre-Dame Basilica in Montreal

Former Canadian Prime Minister Brian Mulroney was laid to rest today at a state funeral held at Notre-Dame Basilica in Montreal. Mulroney, who passed away at the age of 84 on February 29 in Florida, was remembered by family, friends, and dignitaries for his leadership, humor, and dedication to service.

Mulroney’s daughter, Caroline Mulroney, delivered a heartfelt eulogy, painting a portrait of a man who not only shaped Canadian politics but also cherished his family above all else. She fondly recalled her father’s unique storytelling ability and his commitment to treating everyone with respect and kindness.

“He had a unique style which included telling stories that he honed over the years,” Caroline Mulroney said. “But to dad, everyone mattered. The man who hands out the butter matters just as much as the Prime Minister because to dad, everyone mattered.”

Caroline Mulroney also reflected on her father’s humble beginnings and the sacrifices made by her grandfather to ensure Brian Mulroney could pursue his dreams. She highlighted his deep love for his wife, Mila, and his unwavering support for his children’s aspirations.

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau also paid tribute to Mulroney, acknowledging his significant contributions to Canada, including his leadership on free trade agreements and environmental initiatives. Trudeau spoke of Mulroney’s ability to bridge political divides and prioritize the well-being of Canadians above all else.

“Brian Mulroney was motivated by service, leadership, and getting the big things right,” Trudeau said. “His most cherished victories were nonpartisan, those moments where the true winner was Canada itself.”

The funeral ceremony was attended by prominent figures from politics, sports, and business, including former Quebec Premier Jean Charest, Quebec businessman Pierre-Karl Peladeau, and hockey legend Wayne Gretzky, who shared fond memories of Mulroney.

“We’ve had so many wonderful speakers, you’re going to figure out who’s in politics and which guy is the hockey player real quick,” Gretzky remarked, eliciting laughter from the audience.

Conservative leader Pierre Poilievre and his wife, Anaida, were among the attendees, paying their respects to Mulroney and his legacy.

As Mulroney’s casket was led out of the basilica, the sounds of somber reflection echoed through the grand halls, marking the end of a poignant ceremony that celebrated the life and legacy of a remarkable leader and devoted family man.

The ceremony served as a poignant reminder of the universal truth that one day, each of us will face our own mortality. Regardless of our achievements or status, we will ultimately be remembered not for our titles or accolades, but for the goodness we spread and the deeds we leave behind. In the end, as we depart this world, we journey toward our final destination alone, drawing nearer to the divine presence of God. May Brian Mulroney rest in peace, his memory cherished and his contributions to Canada forever honored.
