Two Killed, Two Critically Injured in Stratford

A quiet neighbourhood in Stratford was thrust into chaos late Thursday night after a shooting incident left two individuals dead and two others critically injured. The tragic event has sent shockwaves through the community, known for its peaceful streets and close-knit atmosphere.

The Stratford Police Service received multiple emergency calls at approximately 10:45 p.m. on August 1, 2024, reporting gunshots in the vicinity of Bradshaw Drive and McCarthy Road West. Upon arrival, officers discovered four victims suffering from gunshot wounds. One victim was pronounced dead at the scene, while a second succumbed to injuries after being transported to Stratford General Hospital. The remaining two victims were rushed to Victoria Hospital in London by ORNGE air ambulance, where one remains in life-threatening condition and the other is being treated for a severe, life-altering injury.

The investigation has revealed that the shooter, identified as 31-year-old Ricky Bilcke, opened fire following a protracted neighbour dispute. The first victim, Jonathan Bennett, 36, was struck by a high-powered rifle from across the street and later died at the hospital. Bilcke then retrieved a shotgun and continued his attack on the road, targeting 43-year-old David Tokley, who is now in critical condition. The third victim, Stephanie Irvine, who exited her residence during the commotion, was also shot by Bilcke before he turned the gun on himself, ending his life.

In response, the Stratford Police Service, in collaboration with the Ontario Provincial Police and their Forensic Identification Team, cordoned off the area to conduct a thorough investigation. The streets remain closed to the public as authorities continue to piece together the events leading up to the incident.

Recognizing the emotional toll of the incident, Victim Services Huron Perth has made support available to those impacted. The organization offers 24-hour assistance and can be contacted at 1-866-863-4108 or through their website.

The Stratford community is grappling with the shock and sorrow brought on by this tragic event. As the investigation unfolds, the hope remains that answers will be found, and the tight-knit neighbourhood can begin to heal from the senseless violence that has upended their lives.
