The Calgary Stampede Kicked Off with Spectacular Festivities

The Calgary Stampede, renowned as “The Greatest Outdoor Show on Earth,” commenced its 2024 edition today, marking the beginning of ten days packed with excitement, culture, and economic vitality. The event, which runs from July 5-14, 2024, promises a diverse array of activities that celebrate Calgary’s western heritage while offering entertainment and educational opportunities for visitors from near and far. At the core of the Calgary Stampede are more than 3,000 dedicated volunteers who embody western values and foster a sense of community.

The Calgary Stampede is committed to empowering youth through various programs that nurture talent in the performing arts. Initiatives like The Young Canadians School of Performing Arts, Calgary Stampede Showband, Band of Outriders, and Calgary Stampede Showriders provide young people with opportunities to develop their skills and perform globally. These programs not only enhance artistic abilities but also impart valuable life skills.

The economic impact of the Calgary Stampede extends far beyond the 10-day event. Stampede Park hosts over 1,200 events annually, drawing more than four million guests from around the world. These events generate over $540 million for local businesses, including hotels, restaurants, and shops, making the Stampede a vital economic driver for the region.

In addition to its economic benefits, the Stampede creates over 3,500 seasonal jobs each year, offering many young Calgarians their first work experience. These seasonal positions, alongside 1,500 year-round jobs, provide essential skills and employment opportunities that contribute to the local economy.

Agriculture and agri-food are central to the Calgary Stampede’s mission. The event offers classroom training and hands-on experiences to educate local students about food sustainability, land and ecosystem management, and animal care. These programs engage over 50,000 youth annually, connecting them with Alberta’s rural roots and promoting a deeper understanding of agricultural practices.

This year, the Calgary Stampede introduces several immersive experiences that blend entertainment with education. The “Immersive Disney Animation” exhibit allows visitors to explore the magic of Disney while enjoying the Stampede’s attractions. The “Born to Buck” program celebrates the remarkable equine athletes of the Stampede, showcasing mares and foals in the Nutrien Western Event Centre.

Cultural diversity is a highlight of the Calgary Stampede, with events such as the Calgary Stampede Powwow on July 7-8. This competition features the best dancers and drummers from across Canada and the United States, celebrating First Nations’ dancing, singing, and drumming traditions. The BMO Centre will host “Fleurs de Villes COUNTRY,” a floral celebration of Country Music icons, featuring intricate floral mannequins crafted by local florists.

Rodeo enthusiasts can look forward to daily competitions at 1:30 p.m., featuring the world’s toughest competitors in the largest outdoor rodeo. The evening shows, starting at 7:45 p.m., promise a thrilling double-header of entertainment, including performances that blend traditional and contemporary acts.

The Coca-Cola Stage offers a diverse lineup of musical acts, free with park admission. Artists ranging from rock and hip-hop to pop and EDM will perform, ensuring there’s something for everyone. Notable performers include G-Eazy, Dean Lewis, Logic, Billy Talent, Jessie Murph, and many more. The Big Four Roadhouse provides an intimate venue for music lovers, featuring headliners like Five Alarm Funk, Melanie C, VAVO, Cash Cash, Shakey Graves, and more.

Families will find plenty of entertainment options, from the “Monster Energy Compound,” where motocross athletes perform gravity-defying stunts, to the “Dog Bowl,” featuring highly trained canine athletes in agility, frisbee, and freestyle dancing performances. Additionally, the Sam Centre offers an immersive experience that brings the Stampede story to life through exhibits, digital experiences, and archival collections.

The Calgary Stampede continues to be a cornerstone of Calgary’s cultural and economic landscape. With its blend of tradition and innovation, the 2024 Stampede promises to offer something for everyone, reinforcing its reputation as “The Greatest Outdoor Show on Earth.” As the city gears up for this iconic event, the spirit of volunteerism, community, and celebration remains at the heart of the Calgary Stampede, ensuring its legacy for future generations.
