Southern Alberta Blanketed by Season’s First Big Snowfall

Southern Alberta has officially entered winter, marked by the arrival of the season’s first significant snowfall. As residents grapple with icy roads and fresh drifts, city crews and Calgary police are addressing the immediate challenges while Environment and Climate Change Canada forecasts what lies ahead for the week.

After a mild fall with less than four centimeters of snow recorded in Calgary until now, the city saw that amount overnight on Sunday alone. Snowfall continued today, through Monday, creating a challenging start to the workweek, particularly for morning commuters.

Drivers who have yet to adjust to winter conditions contributed to an increase in crashes, with many vehicles ending up in ditches. Police noted that many collisions were caused by motorists continuing to travel at speeds appropriate for dry roads. By 8 a.m. Monday, officers had responded to 20 collisions, including one hit-and-run, doubling their typical daily call volume for accidents.

Calgary’s snowplows were out in force to manage the situation. While major routes received priority attention, residential roads remained snow-covered for much of the day.

The snowfall may provide a brief reprieve before more wintry weather arrives. Environment and Climate Change Canada predicts a weak system will pass through the Rockies midweek, bringing a light dusting of 2 to 4 cm of snow by Wednesday.

However, the end of the week could see a more impactful weather event, with up to 15 centimetres of snow expected in the Calgary region.

Detailed Forecast:

  • Monday Night: Periods of snow tapering to a 60 per cent chance of flurries overnight. Accumulations of 2-4 cm expected, with a low of -6°C and a wind chill near -10°C.
  • Tuesday: A mix of sun and clouds with a 60 per cent chance of flurries. High of -4°C, with wind chill making it feel closer to -10°C.
  • Wednesday: Periods of snow and a high of -10°C.
  • Thursday to Saturday: Periods of snow expected daily, with overnight lows dropping as far as -16°C. Daytime highs will hover around -11°C to -12°C.
  • Sunday: A mix of sun and clouds with a 60 per cent chance of flurries. High of -13°C.

Preparedness Urged

Officials are urging residents to drive cautiously and equip vehicles with winter tires. Additionally, homeowners are reminded to shovel sidewalks promptly to prevent injuries and fines.

While the early taste of winter may have caught some off guard, Calgarians have no choice but to embrace the season and prepare for the storms ahead.
