A rockslide struck Thursday afternoon on the Bow Glacier Falls hiking trail in Banff National Park, killing one person and injuring multiple hikers, authorities say.
The incident occurred around 1:30 p.m. near Bow Lake, about 37 km north of Lake Louise along the Icefields Parkway. The Royal Canadian Mounted Police confirmed hikers were hit by falling rock, with at least one fatality and others with serious injuries.
Emergency teams responded quickly. The RCMP, Parks Canada, local fire crews, paramedics, and two STARS air ambulance units from Edmonton and Calgary joined the rescue operation.
Highway 93 near Bow Lake was temporarily closed to allow rescue vehicles to work safely. Parks Canada advised the public to avoid the area while the response continues.
The Bow Glacier Falls trail is a 9‑km round‑trip hike of moderate difficulty, popular among families and open year‑round.
Premier Danielle Smith and Conservative Leader Pierre Poilievre expressed their condolences and gratitude to first responders following the incident.
