Officer-Involved Shooting in North Edmonton

The Alberta Serious Incident Response Team (ASIRT) has launched an investigation into an officer-involved shooting that occurred in the Fraser neighbourhood of north Edmonton. The incident, which resulted in the death of a 28-year-old man, transpired today.

At approximately 9:24 p.m., patrol officers from the Northeast Branch of the Edmonton Police Service (EPS) were dispatched to the vicinity of 153 Avenue and Anthony Henday Drive. The deployment followed reports of a single-vehicle rollover collision, allegedly involving an impaired driver. Witnesses at the scene informed police that the male driver had fled the site of the accident on foot.

During the ensuing search, officers encountered the suspect, leading to a confrontation. During this altercation, one officer discharged their firearm, striking the individual. The precise details of the confrontation remain unclear, and it is yet to be determined what prompted the officer to use their firearm.

Emergency Medical Services (EMS) arrived promptly, providing immediate medical assistance to the injured man. Despite their efforts, the 28-year-old succumbed to his injuries after being transported to the hospital. The identity of the deceased has not been released pending notification of next of kin.

The EPS confirmed that the individual had not been detained by the time of the shooting. Following the incident, a 46.1 notification was issued to the Alberta Director of Law Enforcement, who then directed ASIRT to conduct a comprehensive investigation into the circumstances surrounding the officer-involved shooting.

The EPS has refrained from providing further details, citing the ongoing nature of the ASIRT investigation. They have directed all media inquiries to ASIRT, emphasizing their commitment to transparency and accountability in the investigative process.

ASIRT’s mandate includes the investigation of incidents involving Alberta’s police that result in serious injury or death, as well as allegations of police misconduct. Their role is crucial in ensuring that such incidents are examined thoroughly and impartially.

ASIRT’s findings will play a pivotal role in addressing these concerns and ensuring that justice is served. The investigation’s outcome will likely influence future policy and training within the EPS, aimed at preventing similar incidents.
