Human Remains Found in Kawartha Lakes Amid Search for Missing Woman

Human remains have been discovered by York Regional Police’s Homicide Unit and the Search and Rescue Team (SAR) in the Village of Kirkfield, Kawartha Lakes, ON, sparking an ongoing investigation connected to the disappearance of Ying Zhang.

On Monday, July 29, 2024, at approximately 5 p.m., SAR members uncovered the remains during a ground search in the area of Palestine Road and Fenel Road. The search was part of the efforts to locate Ying Zhang, who was reported missing last Thursday.

The Office of the Chief Coroner is working to confirm the identity of the remains. York Regional Police stated that investigators are diligently working on the case, but the confirmation process by forensic science authorities is still pending.

Ying Zhang was last seen at her workplace, a wellness center located near Woodbine Avenue and Steelcase Road, at 10:40 a.m. on July 25, 2024. Surveillance footage captured a white Ford van and a suspect carrying a large green wheeled bin in the vicinity at the time of her disappearance. The same vehicle was later tracked to the area in Kirkfield, prompting the search that led to the grim discovery.

A 26-year-old man has been charged with kidnapping, forcible confinement, and aggravated assault in connection with Zhang’s disappearance. Authorities are still investigating the nature of the relationship between Zhang and the accused. York Regional Police Constable James Dickinson noted that investigators have not yet confirmed how Zhang and the suspect knew each other, and the investigation is exploring all possible motives.

Police are urging anyone who may have seen the suspect, the white Ford van, or any suspicious activity in the areas of Woodbine Avenue and Steelcase Road or Kirkfield in Kawartha Lakes on July 25 to come forward.
