The announcement took place at the University of Calgary’s downtown campus, with Minister Sigurdson expressing enthusiasm for the collaboration between the government and the academic sector. He highlighted the importance of strategic adoption of digital innovations in agriculture and emphasized the government’s commitment to supporting Alberta producers.

The funding, totaling 1.2 million over three years, will be directed towards policy research conducted by the Simpson Centre. This research will focus on understanding the challenges and opportunities associated with the digitization of agriculture. By gathering experts, farmers, ranchers, and producers, the Simpson Centre aims to facilitate discussions on the effective adoption of digital technologies in the industry.

Representatives from key agricultural organizations, including the Alberta Beef Producers and the United Farmers of Alberta, will be actively involved in this initiative.

Minister Sigurdson emphasized the importance of supporting Alberta producers in maintaining their position as global leaders in agricultural innovation. By fostering dialogue and conducting research on digital technology adoption, the government aims to inform policy decisions that will enhance production and improve food security.

Dr. McCauley, President and Vice Chancellor of the University of Calgary, also expressed gratitude for the government’s support. He highlighted the significance of digitalization in boosting productivity, enhancing land and animal stewardship, and driving economic growth in Alberta’s agricultural sector.

The initiative will focus on raising awareness about the benefits of digitalization, building capacity for data literacy and use, and assessing the infrastructure needs for widespread adoption of digital technologies in rural communities.

With collaborative efforts between government, academia, and industry, the province is poised to lead the way in agricultural digitalization, ensuring continued growth and prosperity for generations to come.
