Edmonton teen charged with impaired driving in fatal October crash

A 19-year-old man is facing several charges, including impaired operation causing death, following a single-vehicle crash in early October that claimed the life of another 19-year-old.

Edmonton Police Service (EPS) officials say the fatal collision occurred on Oct. 3, 2024, near 149 Street and Yellowhead Trail, when a white Dodge Dakota struck a cement barricade and erupted into flames.

A passerby managed to pull the truck’s driver out before the fire took full hold. Paramedics rushed the driver to hospital with serious but non-life-threatening injuries.

Investigators initially believed only one person was inside the vehicle at the time of the collision. However, as evidence emerged, police began to suspect there was a second occupant. On Oct. 4, officers located the missing 19-year-old man’s remains inside the severely burned truck.

After nearly three months of gathering information and conducting interviews, the EPS Major Collision Investigations Section announced Dec. 30 that Ethan Stoley, 19, has been charged with:

  • Impaired operation causing death
  • Impaired operation (alcohol over limit) causing death
  • Dangerous driving causing death

Stoley’s next court appearance has yet to be scheduled, and the charges against him have not been proven in court.

Police continue to investigate the crash and encourage anyone who may have additional information, including dashcam footage from the area on Oct. 3, to contact the EPS or Crime Stoppers.
