The Edmonton Police Service (EPS) is investigating a series of dangerous incidents in which objects were thrown from overpasses onto Whitemud Drive in West Edmonton.
Since March 27, police have responded to 12 reports of rocks or other heavy debris being hurled from pedestrian bridges onto the busy thoroughfare between 149 Street and 184 Street. These acts have resulted in significant vehicle damage and posed serious risks to occupants.
One incident on May 29 caused extensive damage to a vehicle near 184 Street and Whitemud Drive, highlighting the severity of these acts.
“In 2002, a 75-year-old man was killed in a similar incident, and two teenagers were charged with manslaughter,” said Const. Tylar Heigh of EPS West Branch. “Throwing objects at moving vehicles can have severe consequences, including civilian deaths and serious criminal charges for the perpetrators.”
Police have not determined if these West Edmonton incidents are connected to similar occurrences in South Edmonton, near 53 Avenue and Whitemud Drive, reported in late 2023 and early 2024.
