Cocaine and contraband cigarettes seized in Edmonton

Edmonton police have charged a 50-year-old man after seizing large amounts of cocaine, contraband cigarettes and cash during a search of a home in northeast Edmonton.

Edmonton Police Service said officers executed a search warrant on Jan. 25 at a residence in the Evansdale neighbourhood as part of an ongoing drug trafficking investigation. During the search, police seized 2.2 kilograms of cocaine, 13 kilograms of phenacetin, a substance commonly used to cut cocaine, 4,200 cartons of unstamped cigarettes and more than $126,000 in cash.

Police said the quantity of drugs and tobacco seized suggests the operation went beyond small-scale trafficking.

Yurk Kee Wong, 50, was arrested at the scene and is facing eight charges, including four drug trafficking offences under the Controlled Drugs and Substances Act, three charges related to the sale of unstamped tobacco and one count of possession of proceeds of crime.

Police have not said whether additional arrests are expected. The investigation remains ongoing.
