EDMONTON – The Edmonton Police Service (EPS) has formally charged a 30-year-old man in connection with a tragic pedestrian collision that occurred in the Allard neighbourhood in June. The incident resulted in the death of a three-year-old boy and left two others with injuries.
The collision occurred at approximately 5:08 p.m. on Thursday, June 27, 2024, when EPS Southwest Branch patrol officers were dispatched to the intersection of Allard Road SW and Allard Boulevard SW. According to the police report, a 2019 Ford F150 truck, driven by Zhaobo Wu, was travelling northbound on Allard Road SW. The truck reportedly stopped abruptly at a three-way stop at the intersection before making a left turn onto Allard Boulevard SW.
At the same time, an adult woman, aged 39, and her two young children, a seven-year-old girl and a three-year-old boy, were crossing Allard Road SW eastbound in a marked crosswalk on the south side of the intersection. As the truck turned, it ran over the young boy and struck both the mother and her daughter.
Emergency Medical Services (EMS) quickly arrived at the scene. Despite their efforts, the three-year-old boy was pronounced dead at the scene due to the severity of his injuries. The mother and daughter were treated for non-life-threatening injuries and subsequently transported to a nearby hospital for further care. The driver, Zhaobo Wu, did not report any injuries.
On Saturday, July 27, 2024, after an extensive investigation, EPS charged Zhaobo Wu with multiple offences under the Traffic Safety Act. The charges include careless driving and failing to yield to a pedestrian in three instances. These charges reflect the seriousness of the incident and the resulting loss and injuries.
