Boil Water Advisory Issued for Bowness, Citywide Water Use Reduction Requested

A significant water main break in Bowness has led to a Boil Water Advisory for the community and a citywide call for reduced water use. The break, discovered on the evening of June 5, is affecting a critical transmission line essential for moving water across Calgary.

The water main break has resulted in water outages in Bowness and lowered water pressure in nearby communities, including Parkdale, West Hillhurst, Hillhurst, and Scarboro. In response, Alberta Health Services (AHS) issued a Boil Water Advisory for Bowness, effective immediately.

Residents and businesses in Bowness are instructed to boil all tap water for at least one minute before use. This includes water for drinking, brushing teeth, washing raw foods, preparing infant formula, making ice, and other consumption purposes. The advisory will remain until further notice.

Mandatory Outdoor Water Restrictions

  • Watering lawns, gardens, trees, and shrubs is banned.
  • Washing outdoor surfaces, including buildings, windows, sidewalks, and driveways, is prohibited unless required for health and safety.
  • Filling pools, hot tubs, and decorative fountains is not allowed.
  • Using water for construction activities such as grading and dust control is restricted.

Voluntary Indoor Water Restrictions

Calgarians are asked to reduce indoor water use by:

  • Delaying the use of dishwashers and washing machines.
  • Limiting shower times and taking shallow baths.
  • Turning off humidifiers and ice machines.
  • Ensuring water taps are off when not in use.

Businesses that use large volumes of non-essential water, such as laundromats and car washes, are requested to cut back on water use. Exemptions apply to businesses needing water for health and safety standards, like hospitals and restaurants.

The incident has also led to traffic disruptions. Sixteenth Avenue N.W. is closed between Home Road and Sarcee Trail in both directions. Calgarians are advised to avoid this area and consider alternate routes like Crowchild Trail, 29 Street N.W., Home Road, Stoney Trail, and Sarcee Trail. Expect significant delays and consider working from home if possible.
