About 49% of households in apartments or flats composted kitchen waste, compared with 66% to 74% of those in detached or other ground-oriented homes.
Composting was reported by 75% of households in larger urban centres, compared with 53% to 64% in other population areas. Prince Edward Island had the highest provincial rate at 96%, followed by Nova Scotia at 92%.
Households that had lived in the same dwelling for at least 10 years composted at a rate of 69%. Among more recent residents, rates ranged from 60% to 64%.
There is a similar housing gap in hazardous waste disposal. Some 82% of households in single-detached homes used controlled disposal methods, compared with 62% of those in apartments or flats. The rate was 83% in senior-only households and 71% in adult-only households.
