Today, in a big announcement against the stunning backdrop of Alberta’s natural beauty, Premier Danielle Smith unveiled her government’s plan to make tourism a major player in the province’s economy. Joined by important figures like Minister of Tourism and Sport Joseph Schow, CEO of Indigenous Tourism Alberta Shae Bird, and CEO of Tourism Industry Association of Alberta Darren Reeder, Premier Smith outlined the comprehensive plan to make Alberta a top tourist destination by increasing spending to $25 billion by 2035.
The announcement, made on the traditional territory of Treaty 6 and 8 signatories, showed the government’s commitment to growing tourism while respecting Indigenous heritage. Premier Smith shared her excitement for the plan, highlighting Alberta’s many attractions beyond just its famous mountains. From UNESCO World Heritage Sites to exciting festivals and stunning natural wonders, Alberta has a lot to offer.
The new plan focuses on several key areas, including helping rural communities, making new tourism experiences, improving travel access, and working with Indigenous tourism ventures.
Premier Smith stressed the importance of sustainable development, saying it’s crucial for making sure Alberta stays competitive. More money will be given to Travel Alberta to help advertise Alberta to the world, and efforts will be made to attract more visitors from other countries.
Minister Joseph Schow echoed Premier Smith’s words, saying the plan will focus on leadership, creating new tourism experiences, helping people find jobs, improving travel access, and promoting Indigenous tourism. He believes Alberta’s rich culture and beautiful landscapes can attract tourists from all over.
CEO of Indigenous Tourism Alberta, Shae Bird, praised the plan for recognizing the importance of Indigenous tourism. He said it can bring economic benefits and help with reconciliation between Indigenous and non-Indigenous people.
Darren Reeder, CEO of Tourism Industry Association of Alberta, said the plan is a big moment for Alberta’s tourism industry. He believes tourism can create jobs and help Alberta grow economically.
Premier Smith also responded to inquiries regarding two specific topics: the carbon tax and shifts in the priorities of the NDP (New Democratic Party).
During the Q&A session, Premier Smith answered questions about municipal funding and federal support for roads. She also addressed questions about the carbon tax and changes in the priorities of the NDP.
By working together and being innovative, she believes Alberta can become a top tourist destination, bringing prosperity to the province.
