More than 240 believed dead in Air India crash, including Canadian citizen

A devastating plane crash in northwestern India has left more than 240 people feared dead, including one Canadian, after an Air India Boeing 787 Dreamliner went down shortly after takeoff from Ahmedabad en route to London.

The aircraft crashed in a densely populated residential area midday, prompting a large-scale emergency response. Officials confirmed there were 242 people on board, including 169 Indian nationals, 53 Britons, seven Portuguese citizens and one Canadian. Authorities anticipate additional casualties on the ground, as the aircraft came down in the heart of the city.

The Boeing 787 Dreamliner involved in the incident is one of the most advanced commercial aircraft currently in service. According to aviation safety records, this marks the first fatal crash involving a Dreamliner since the aircraft’s introduction into commercial operation more than a decade ago.

While the cause of the crash has not been confirmed, preliminary observations suggest the aircraft may have experienced a sudden loss of power shortly after takeoff. It is believed the flight may have attempted to return to the airport but was unable to maintain altitude.

Prime Minister Mark Carney addressed the tragedy in a statement posted to X, formerly Twitter: “Devastated to learn of the crash of a London-bound Air India plane in Ahmedabad, carrying 242 passengers, including one Canadian. My thoughts are with the loved ones of everyone on board. Canada’s transportation officials are in close contact with counterparts and I am receiving regular updates as the response to this tragedy unfolds.”

Conservative Leader Pierre Poilievre also expressed condolences, writing: “My heart goes out to the families of the 242 people on the Air India plane crash. Terrible news that a Canadian was onboard. Our thoughts are with the families of all who were on the flight.”

Further updates will be provided as more information becomes available.
